Farewell Old Friend - Time to say Adios to Webmonkey
17 February 2004
It's a sad sad day in web history. Lycos announed today that it will be closing WebMonkey - a terrific online library of tips, tricks, tutorials and reference guides written in a casual, tongue-in-cheeck way.
Web Monkey was a resource that I discovered back in 1997 when I was just a fledging web designer, and it has saved my butt many many times since. Heck, last year when I started learning ColdFusion and SQL WebMonkey was there for me with a number of tutorials to get me though. And get me through it did, Nashaquisset was my very first stab at a dynamic site.
In 1998 they had a contest where they were giving away Web Monkey ski hats. I was so elated when I won mine! But alas, my dipshit ex-boyfriend won't give it back (as he is fond of doing with a bunch of my stuff that has any sort of eBay value).
But I digress. It's been an emotional day.
I noticed sometime in the last year or 2 that new articles weren't being added that often, 2 a month when in the old days it was 3 a week. That's when I knew the end was coming, and now finally it is here.
I've been sad today. Saying goodbye to Web Monkey is like saying goodbye to an old friend.
Webmonkey - Thanks for all your years of help - I certainly wouldn't be where I am in my career if it weren't for you. I will remember you fondly, and perhaps one day my ex-boyfriend will grow some ethics and gimme my hat back to remember you by.
