White People Ain't Got No Soul 17 February 2004

Had a rockin' Valentine's Day this year - we went to the Gospel Jubilee at the New England Conservatory where they had gospel groups from various church's around Boston-metro perform, Jessie Jackson gave a sermon and they had a kick ass soloist and "grand finale" guy.

It was an evening of such intense, uplifting music. I'm really not a religious person, but I admire those who are. The audience was mostly black people, maybe 90% or so and what was interesting to me was how many of them just got sooooo into it. The white people mostly sat there like stiff waspy boards, while the black people who just do whatever moved them - some people stodd up and sang, others danced. Many people would close their eyes and hold up their arm - maybe both - in the air. I've not seen this done before, but they all looked so passionate in doing so. It's like they were feeling the energy of the room - or of God - and trying to absorb it. While one person was giving a sermon sort of thing, this woman in the choir just got so taken, raising her arms and saying "thank you lord thank you lord". She just got so overwhelmed, and she went with it and I'm sure without even thinking twice.

So that was a very interesting cross-cultural experience. White people are always soooo reserved (unless they're rioting like a bunch of moron's because the home-town football team won the superbowl) and uptight - you'd never start singing or praising while someone else was speaking. You'd never lift your arms up for fear of blocking someone else's view. But most importantly, we never seem to loose our selves in anything except work. Just goes to show, white people ain't got no soul.
