The Kindness of Strangers
27 June 2004
Recently I got an e-mail from a very kind woman in England named Helen who wanted to register my KMKMKM font.
We got to chatting - turns out we have a lot in common! - and I told her about the costly troubles Beaker has been going through lately with his eye and the mounting vet bills, and other troubles in my life. Instead of sending me the $5 for the font, she actually bought me a gift off of my amazon.com wishlist. It arrived a week later, and she even had it gift wrapped and included a little card.
While in the grand scheme of things it was a rather small thing, this gesture from an utter stranger was so incredibly touching to me. Here's a person who doesn't know me from a hole in the wall, and yet instead of PayPal'ing me some cash (not that there's anything wrong with that) decided to send me a gift to cheer me up. At a point when 4 weeks worth of stress was getting the better of me, this warmed my heart in so many ways. I saw this as more than just one human reaching out to another, but as an act of humanity - something so many people are too busy, too selfish or just too ignorant to bother with. To do something for another - whether a friend or a stranger - is a huge gift to the world. It is humanity in its purest form.
Helen is a recent interior design grad and quite talented. Aside from making spaces look pretty, she has a real passion for eco-friendly designs, something that we Pottery Barn lovers often overlook in our quest for Martha Stewart perfect interiors. Her work involves making people's spaces more efficient and user-friendly while incorporating splashes of color and life. Wow - UI and color. A woman after my own heart!
Please give Helen's website a visit at kittendesigns.com and check out her stuff!
Beaker Update
Beaker continues to make progress. "Slow and steady is what wins the race" is what the vet said this week. He's still got at least a few more weeks to go which means a few more weeks of eye meds every 2 hours and going to "camp" at the vet's every day.
