The United States of Canada 05 November 2004

I am a democrat living in New Hampshire. While I always knew I would vote for Kerry over Bush, I was never gung-ho for him until the debates. The first debate got me really fired up; I fell in love with John Kerry - I love that he is an intellectual, that he is a multi-dimensional thinker. I love that he doesn't just make a decision and stick with it at all costs - I hate people like that, nothing in life is fixed and you need to beable to roll with the punches as a situation changes. I love his desire to work on alternative fuel sources to limit our dependence on foreign oil - I agree that that is the crucial part of fighting the "war on terror".So in the begining of October I joined MoveOnPAC to help get out the vote in key towns of NH.

For the last 4 weeks I busted my ass calling people, going door to door, coordinating a team of about 25 volunteers. I've been steadily working 16 hours each day (9 at my regular job and 7+ at my MoveOn job) for 23 solid days. My feet hurt. My knee is screwed up. My back is messed up. I can barely walk around now.

I did everything I could to help Kerry win this election. I was at the polling place all day. The voter turn-out in my town was absolutely phenominal - about 85% turn-out. It was gratifying to see Kerry win NH. I don't know if my efforts helped or not, but I was glad to be a part of it. It was a fantastic experience (although exhausting) and I learned a lot.

To say I am disappointed is an understatement. To be honest, I was not prepared to feel this bad. I feel such a sense of loss inside, and everytime I see or hear Kerry in the news my eyes tear up again. I've been crying on and off for the last 2 days.

Kerry really gave us a sense of hope - hope for the economy, hope for restoring peace, hope for the environment - and now that hope is gone. The mood here in northern Mass where I work is somber at best.

Why the graphic up top? The US is so divided right now (you know, as in "I'm a divider, not a uniter") that it's been suggested all the blue states break off and join Canada, we will be the "United States of Canada". The 13 maple leaves are for the 13 provinces of Canada and the 20 blue and white stripes are for the 20 "blue" states that are seperating to Canada. The "red" states can band together to be "Jesustan". Perhaps their flag can be the Nascar flag.

Here's a great proposal for the split. If it doesn't happen, the kind folks in Canada have offered to marry a US liberal to escape.
