Washington DC , October 2003

In October Bill and I went down to Washington DC for the wedding of his old college friend, "Probe" and Rebecca on October 25, 2003.

I flew down Friday night. We stayed at the Hotel Madera, a swanky boutique hotel at Du Pont Circle. Friday night Bill went to the bachelor party where he and the other TEPs in attendance hung out and drank gin and tonics. Saturday we went over to Beef's house (another TEP) for a TEP reunion of sorts. I got to meet all sorts of fun, interesting smart people.

Saturday night was the wedding and it was spectacular. The wedding was held at the very posh Cosmos Club, which according to their website is " the closest thing to a social headquarters for Washington's intellectual elite". I guess that's appropriate given the number of MIT alumi there. :)

The event was black tie optional and everyone looked so elegant in their tuxedos. The club itself is incredible, such detail in the decor - the finish of the wood, the intricate moulding, the art work.

Dinner was another matter. Given the high-level of sophistication of the Cosmos Club I was very disappointed with the service. We were served a lovely appetizer of angel hair pasta with sun-dried tomatoes. Dinner was a salmon dish, and seeing how I don't eat fish of any kind I was disappointed that there was no vegetarian option (no choice was offered on the RSVP card). More than that, I was rather offended by the server as she gave me total attitude when I asked if they had something else. After I sat there like a boob watching everyone eat for 15 minutes, I asked the server if she could bring me another plate of the appetizer which she did, but hadn't bothered to heat it up. However, all was not lost as the free flowing Veuve Cliquot made up for it entirely.

On Sunday we went to brunch at Rebecca's parents house - author Alan Topol - in Chevy Chase, MD. The catered brunch was excellent, and we enjoyed drinking our coffee out of these little teeny shot-glass sized mugs. I pretended I was a giant.

Sunday night it was back home. Bill and I flew back to Manchester, NH together and then back to work Monday to meet an intense deadline I spent the prior 3 weeks working on.
